Managed Routing Platform - MRP

PacketExchange has developed a multi service platform that delivers real value to users above and beyond ‘vanilla‘ IP Transit offerings. Our Managed Routing Platform (MRP) is designed to enable every organization to build an Internet infrastructure and strategy in the same way as the very biggest Carriers and ISPs but without the need for the equivalent infrastructure, manpower and budgets. PacketExchange takes care of the operational day-to-day necessities of running a complex BGP infrastructure allowing you to focus on core business activities.

MRP offers connectivity to multiple major Internet backbones and offers both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity. This multi-homed configuration ensures we maximize access to the widest possible number of Internet routes, offering consistency of performance as we seek out the most favourable routes at all times. Utilizing a combination of suppliers offers a far greater choice of routes than a connection to a single Tier 1 and guards against routing inconsistencies or failures that single supplier might suffer. There are currently approximately 330,000 routes available on the Internet and we aim to deliver the best possible access to each.

Uniquely, the MRP also allows access to the PacketExchange Direct Interconnect Fabric, eXpress, a layer 2 VPLS infrastructure that spans the full geography of the PacketExchange network. The Interconnect Fabric is utilized by some 140 networks resident in the US, EU and Asia for geographically independent private peering. Membership is completely automatic and transparent to the user.  In addition, MRP is connected to PacketExchange's own IP backbone, with an additional 550+ directly-connected networks around the world. Connectivity over the PacketExchange private network infrastructure provides higher quality than IPT as it avoids the vagaries of the public Internet infrastructure.

A third strand to the MRP platform is international Internet exchange connectivity. Using the PacketExchange layer 2 network, MRP is able to deliver user traffic directly into the major global peering points. These exchanges are the major carriers interconnect facilities and MRP will allow users access to all the benefits without the need for individual membership.

This combination of connectivity media – multi-homed IPT, private peering via the Direct Interconnect Fabric and international IX access – will ensure that traffic traversing the MRP is allowed to route via the fastest and most efficient path to its end destination.

Managed Routing Platform Key Advantages
  • No reliance on a single IPT provider network avoids downtime through failure or maintenance windows
  • Multiple feeds assure the user of 100% connectivity - if one fails, there are others immediately available
  • A single Tier 1 IPT Provider is solely reliant on their own network and peering. If this fails, they have no IPT to reroute around the issues - reference the peering spats between providers that make large chunks of the Internet unreachable for some customers.
  • Direct peering to 500+ networks around the world, enabling traffic to bypass the Tier 1 networks whenever possible.
  • An aggregated Committed Data Rate across multiple providers and ports means simplified management and cost effective purchase prices.
  • All you need to connect is either an IP capable device – e.g. a server, firewall, PC or router or a Layer 2 switch or similar aggregation device.
  • The service is available to customers who already run their own BGP and can be dual-homed for added resilience.
  • Our global Network Operations Center watches over the backbone and your connections 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
